Last night, my niece (who is biracial) went to a Christmas party. She was verbally attacked by a guy in the Navy who called her a "negro" (and worse), and asked why she should be talking to him, his wife, or others there. This was in a public restaurant in Virginia Beach. The manager on Duty told my niece to "get the f--k out." She replied, "I haven't done anything. This is my work party." He replied, "Can't you see that this man doesn't want you to be friends with his wife, get the f--k out." My husband and I are white. Neither of us tolerate racism in any form. My niece's mother was in a tragic car accident that left her with brain damage and totally paralyzed. My niece has been with my husband and I since she was 12. (She is now 23.). She has never experienced racism like this. I am shocked that a person serving the country would behave like this as well as a person representing a public establishment. Mycroft Holmes: I do not understand your answer. This happened at "Shuckers" restaurant on Atlantic Ave. I was not there. My niece came in crying at 11:30 last night. My husband was asleep. I told him this morning, and we have decided to go to the restaurant owner. If your need to verify my sister's car accident, email me and I will give you the date, place, and where you can find the write up in the paper and how she was life flighted to Vanderbilt Hospital. Also, I can give the history of how she spent the first year after her accident in a coma in the spinal center in Atlanta, or when she finally came home, her husband divorced her and sent her to my 70 year old parents' home so that they could take care of her. Do you want to know how my parents spend over $50,000 a year for her care that insurance does not cover because they cannot with a good conscience put her in a nursing home? Do you know that your entire life can change in a minute?
it’s sad but it happens. It will keep on happening as long as there are ignorant people like that rude asshole in the restaurant.
Wow! You wouldn’t think that something like that would happen in Virginia Beach, where all kinds of people go in and out of there. The guy in the navy was wrong, and so was the manager. I don’t know what else to say but let others know the name of the restaurant so they won’t go to it.

It goes to show you that there are still Neanderthals running around. Just because someone is serving the country doesn’t make them less racist than any other closed minded idiot.
Racism is an ingrain thing especially in your country with a long history of racial issues. It doesn’t necessarily mean that a person who is serving the country should not be a racist. In my opinion, they are the worst & therefore racism in your country has become systemic racism. You should make a complaint to both of the superiors of the guy from the Navy & the manager of the restaurant.
Your niece to me is just an American & her rights should be protected like anyone else.
You should have called the police. They had no right to make her leave. They would have been arrested because I’m sure there were plenty of witnesses. Next time, hold your ground and teach her to hold hers.
It does not surprise me at all and I am surprised you are surprised. Do you honestly believe that all voluntary people joining the armed services to kill people “sorry protect the country” be intelligent and caring for one another.
Racism, the belief that one race is inherently better than another (or all others), is sadly still evident in our world today. There should be laws passed. Lets not forget that discrimination based on race is illegal in the United Kingdom, and there is an international Convention calling for the end of racial discrimination, many private citizens still harbour racism in their thoughts, attitudes and actions. This guy has been lucky on navy ship and probably not on patrol shooting Afghans and Taliban’s and Iraq’s and loosing his friends in the war. He is a weak man with emotional problems and they will catch up with him even in later life. One day somebody may just shoot him for being verbally abusive.
Where the hell was your husband when this verbal abuse happened? What you should do is protest the store manager with signs, letters, lawyers etc. Go back and talk to his supervisor and explain yesterdays incident, and that if he doesn’t get demoted or verbally talked to that your going to protest in front of the store, plus take legal actions. As for this Navy clown don’t talk to him, his wife, family etc, because they didn’t defend your niece, so it is obvious that they feel the same. As for yourself you should be a shame of yourself, because you didn’t defend your niece either? You should of recorded it on your cell phone, and put it in the news plus the internet I bet he would of got fired.
well its sad but it does happen… (unfortunately) … i hate racism and am completely against it but let alot of people know about the incident and you could even take this to the courts and have something seriously done about it if you wanted, let the people know by even a simple section in your newspaper so others wont go there
